IMO Dangerous Goods Classes
FORAY GLOBAL Logistics provides safe, compliant, and efficient transportation services for all IMO-classified dangerous goods. Below you will find a clear and professional overview of each IMO class, prepared according to international maritime standards.
IMO Class 1 – Explosives: Explosives classified under IMO Class 1 vary based on the type and severity of the hazard they pose.
- Class 1.1 – Mass Explosion Hazard: Explosives capable of causing a mass explosion, affecting nearly the entire load at once.
- Class 1.2 – Projection Hazard (No Mass Explosion): Explosives that may project fragments but do not pose a mass explosion hazard.
- Class 1.3 – Fire Hazard with Minor Blast/Projection: Explosives that present a fire hazard, minor blast effect, and limited projection risk.
- Class 1.4 – Minor Explosion Hazard: Explosives with a slight risk of explosion, with effects confined to the package itself.
- Class 1.5 – Very Insensitive Explosives with Mass Explosion Hazard: Very insensitive substances that are difficult to detonate but can explode in bulk under certain conditions.
- Class 1.6 – Extremely Insensitive Articles (No Mass Explosion Hazard): Articles that are extremely insensitive and do not pose a mass explosion hazard.
IMO Class 2 – Gases: Dangerous gases are categorized according to their flammability and toxicity.
- Class 2.1 – Flammable Gases: Gases that are flammable under normal conditions (20°C, 101.3 kPa) and have a low boiling point.
- Class 2.2 – Non-Flammable, Non-Toxic Gases: Compressed, liquefied, refrigerated, or oxidizing gases not classified as Class 2.1 or 2.3.
- Class 2.3 – Toxic Gases: Gases that may be toxic or harmful when inhaled, even at low concentrations.
IMO Class 3 – Flammable Liquids: Liquids with a flash point of 60.5°C (141°F) or below, or heated liquids with a flash point of 37.8°C (100°F) or above.
IMO Class 4 – Flammable Solids & Reactive Substances
- Class 4.1 – Flammable Solids: Solids that ignite easily through friction or heat and burn rapidly.
- Class 4.2 – Substances Liable to Spontaneous Combustion: Pyrophoric substances that ignite within minutes of exposure to air or self-heat without external sources.
- Class 4.3 – Dangerous When Wet: Substances that release flammable or toxic gases upon contact with water.
IMO Class 5 – Oxidizing Substances & Organic Peroxides
- Class 5.1 – Oxidizing Agents: Materials that release oxygen and intensify the combustion of other substances.
- Class 5.2 – Organic Peroxides: Thermally unstable compounds containing the –O–O– bond, derived from hydrogen peroxide.
IMO Class 6 – Toxic & Infectious Substances
- Class 6.1 – Toxic Substances: Materials that may cause serious harm to humans if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed.
- Class 6.2 – Infectious Substances Materials: known or suspected to contain pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
IMO Class 7 – Radioactive Material: Substances emitting ionizing radiation, requiring special handling, labeling, and documentation during transport.
IMO Class 8 – Corrosive Substances: Materials that cause severe skin burns or damage to metals upon prolonged contact.
IMO Class 9 – Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods: Substances that pose a transport hazard but do not fall under other IMO classes, including;
- Environmentally hazardous substances
- Elevated-temperature materials
- Marine pollutants
- Hazardous wastes
- Substances causing discomfort to transport personnel
